A LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY THAT STARTS FROM WHERE YOU STAND

Values-driven idea began with Robert
K. Greenleaf in 1970s.

The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead."

Robert K. Greenleaf

in "The Servant Leader" (1970)

LISTENING

1

Commit to listen earnestly to others. Aim to identify the will of the group and then help to clarify the will. Grow as a servant-leader by increasing listening skills and making time for scheduled time for reflection.

EMPATHY

2

Endeavor to understand and have empathy for others. Recognize "people for their specific and unique qualities."

HEALING

3

A powerful force for integration and transformation is the healing of relationships. The servant-leader and those being led both share "the search for wholeness."

PERSUASION

5

Seek to convince, rather than coerce others with your authority. Learn to become effective at consensus-building within groups. This is a distinction from authoritarian-type leading.

AWARENESS

4

Commitment to cultivate awareness and self-awareness helps to view situations from a more holistic, integrative stance. It also can aid in understanding issues of ethics and values.

CONCEPTUALIZATION

6

From discipline and practice, foster the ability to think beyond short-term goals. Aim to find balance between day-to-day goals and broader, conceptual thinking.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

10

Large institutions are now primary shapers of lives. "Seek to identify some means for building community among those who work within a given institution."

FORESIGHT

7

Related to No. 6, "the ability to foresee the likely outcome of a situation is hard to define, but easy to identify." Use past, present and likely consequences (future) to gain lessons.

STEWARDSHIP

8

In working toward sustainable harmony, stewardship assumes "a commitment to serving the needs of others" toward good for society.

COMMITMENT TO THE GROWTH OF PEOPLE

9

The belief that people have intrinsic value beyond tangible worker contributions. Commit to the personal, professional and spiritual growth of every group individual.
